There are two power options available when you choose your electric stair lift; A/C, which plugs into a standard household electrical outlet, and D/C, which runs from a rechargeable battery. An electric stair lift powered by household A/C current is a convenient option for those who never want to worry about changing a battery. However, if you live in an area where power outages are more prominent, maybe an electric stair lift running off D/C current is a better option for you.
D/C electric stair lifts, sometimes known as BOS (or Battery Operated Systems), have a rechargeable battery that charges when the stair lift is not in use. As with all batteries, a replacement is sometimes necessary, around every 18-24 months.
If you are looking for an electric wheelchair lift, there are companies that offer them. Keep in mind, however, that an electric wheelchair lift is a very large piece of equipment that will not fit in most household stairways. An electric wheelchair lift is used generally in a commercial building application. For residential situations, an electric stair lift is probably your best bet.
If you need help choosing between a BOS or standard electric stair lift, and would like to visit a dealer to help you make an informed decision, use our electric stair lift dealer locator to find a dealer in your area. If price is an issue, don’t forget to ask about a used electric stair lift. Certain dealers do have a rental contract and may be able to accommodate you with a used electric stair lift.
